Phil's Pearly Shrimp I
Their are numerous shrimp patterns out there, making it very confusing to choose "just the right one," so I thought I would add to the mix. You can tie them with a thick body by increasing the number of wraps of body braid, or thinner (as shown) by decreasing the wraps. This pattern is easy to tie, casts well and best of all, fish find it very appetizing.
INGREDIENTS:
  • Hook: Tiemco 811S or equivalent - Sizes 1/0 to 4
  • Body: Pearl body braid, coated with 5 minute epoxy
  • Eyes: Black bead chain, medium size
  • Legs: Pearl Crystal Flash
  • Feelers: Pearl Crystal Flash
  • Thread: Clear mono
RECIPE:
  1. Bend the hook upward slightly, just behind the eye, to give the body its shape.
  2. Place the hook in the vise, attach the thread at the bend.
  3. Tie the bead chain at the bend on top of the hook, using a criss-cross method with the thread, making sure the eyes are straight and level. Cement.
  4. Cut several strands of Pearl Crystal Flash, long enough to extend down the bend in the hook to form the feelers and cover the eye of the hook. Lie it between the eyes, tie in front of the eyes and just behind the eyes.
  5. Cut a length of pearl body braid, enough to cover the hook shank, and tie it behind the bead chain.
  6. Wrap the thread forward to the eye of the hook, over the Pearl Crystal Flash, being careful to keep it on top of the hook.
  7. Wrap the body braid forward around the hook shank and tie off behind the hook eye. Cement.
  8. Trim the Pearl Crystal Flash at the eye to form the tail of the shrimp.
  9. Tie a few half-hitches and wrap the thread back down the body about half way.
  10. Tie in several strands of Pearl Crystal Flash to form the legs. Tie off and cut the thread.
  11. Mix a small amount of epoxy and apply to the body and eyes, being careful not to get it on the legs and feelers.
  12. Let the epoxy cure and go fishing.
